Distribution issues between Great Britain and Northern Ireland due to Brexit

It is the end of month one post-Brexit, and GB-NI (Great Britain to Northern Ireland) are experiencing issues in trade.

Business leaders have described "significant problems" encountered on the Irish Sea trade border in the first weeks of its operation.*

  • Are your medical or pharmaceutical goods taking too long to cross over to Northern Ireland?
  • Are you struggling to get your head around the documentation requirements?
  • Do you not fully understand your requirements according to the INCO terms used on sale of products?
  • Are you concerned about the additional processes and legal responsibilities?
  • Is your current provider letting you down with constant delays, lack of feedback and no clear guidance?

One Northern Ireland haulier had sent 285 trucks to Great Britain since 1 January but only 100 of them returned to Northern Ireland. *

"The knock-on is that they can't service NI exports going back to GB because they've got lorries and equipment sitting in England, waiting for loads that aren't ready yet." This is because businesses in England, Scotland and Wales are not yet prepared. * Seamus Leheny of the freight trade body Logistics UK

That is because while the UK has left the EU, Northern Ireland has remained in the EU single market for goods and is applying the EU's customs rules under a protocol agreed between the UK and the EU.

Many of the challenges this has created, have arisen because some of the guidance was published at short notice, and many companies have not had time to review and put processes in place.

Clarity Pharma are aware of the delays in the critical movement of goods to Northern Ireland for products in the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device sectors. In some cases, wholesalers have refused orders to the country due to the additional complexity in paperwork and the additional customs processes. We are pleased to confirm this is not the case with Clarity Pharma.

Our experience in following MRHA guidelines, GDP, fields of importation, export and customs processes & procedures, means that every pharmaceutical product ordered for delivery to Northern Ireland in the first two weeks of January arrived when promised.

From our discussions with our customers and hauliers, we have discovered that one of the main causes for the delays, is a lack clarity from the consignor around the process and supplying the correct documentation.

Another cause that is likely to cause increasing headaches in February, is transport providers not completing the GMRs (Goods Movement Reference) in time, and with the required information which could lead to unexpected fines and bills.

If you would like to reduce the constant delays, lack of feedback, or require support understanding your INCO terms, additional processes & legal responsibilities to reduce the probability or unexpected fee, please contact us.
